It’s time to stop hoarding toilet paper and realize that this is bigger than you. Bigger than anything our generation has experienced before. Our great grandparents and grandparents had World Wars and the Spanish flu. This is our defining moment. This is the real thing. It’s time to set your own personal interests aside. It’s time to do what’s best for humanity. It’s time to step up.
WHO has concluded that this is a pandemic. This means that everyone will be affected. There’s nowhere to hide. The virus will find every remote corner of the world. At the same time, there’s no cause for panic, since a great majority of the population will only get mild symptoms. However, we need to protect the old and fragile people. We need to make sure that not too many are infected at the same time in order to be able to keep our health system and other vital organizations running.
That’s why need to slow down the spread. Not to extinct the virus, that’s not going to happen, but we need to have a slower rate of infection. The estimates in Sweden are that it will take approximately around 6 months to reach herd immunity, meaning that roughly 60% of the population will have had the infection. Once we’ve reached that threshold, those that haven’t had the virus will be largely protected from contracting it. This is the same way that vaccines work, but since we haven’t got a vaccine we have to do it this way instead.
Now is not the time to travel or go to parties. Now is the time for staying at home and social distancing.
Now is not the time to let grandparents babysit their grandkids. Now is the time to make sure your elderly stay at home and help them do just that.
Now is not the time to hoard supplies. Now is the time to share what you have with your community.
Now is not the time to spread false rumors. Now is the time to listen to what the experts are saying, they know what they’re talking about.
We are in this together and we will get through this. This is our defining moment. This is the real thing.
