As the votes are counted and we await who becomes the next president of the United States, I cannot escape the feeling that the whole situation is a bit surreal. Once again, Trump is stepping over the line declaring himself a winner and questioning the counting of votes. Although, I shouldn’t be too surprised since hardly anything that man says is backed by scientific evidence.
While I look forward to the day when the choice doesn’t stand between two old, white men, I still hope that Biden wins this election. The other option would be a total disaster, not only for the US but for the whole world. But what happens if Trump decides to stay? What if Biden wins by a narrow escape, but Trump refuses to step down? If he refuses to leave the white house? I wouldn’t put it past him. Anything goes.
The corona crisis is escalating at a rapid pace in both the US and Europe. While leaders in Europe are imposing strict regulations and urging their people to take cautionary measures, Trump is talking about how he survived Covid and that it surely isn’t anything to be afraid of. After his recovery, he immediately announced that everyone will get the same treatment as he had received and that it would be free of charge. I can’t help but wonder if he actually believes in what he’s saying; that everyone who contracts Covid-19 in America will get an expensive experimental treatment? That it should be for free? The world doesn’t work that way. The United States doesn’t work that way. There is no such thing as free healthcare in the US. If you have a job, you might be lucky to have medical insurance for you and your family. As soon as you lose that job, which is happening a lot these days, you stand without medical insurance. What happens then when you get Covid?
All he talks about is how to get the economy back on track. I do acknowledge that the pandemic is a major disaster for businesses, but what’s the use of saving businesses if we don’t save the people?
What Trump fails to recognize is that even though he and many others have survived Covid, there is a great number of people that have died and an even greater number that needed medical aid to survive.
The United States can’t beat the virus with Trump as president. I hope the American people vote for a change.
