Today is Lucia. A Swedish tradition that’s celebrated all over the country and also among exile Swedes in other parts of the world.
Lucia and her maids and star singers walk in procession and sing traditional hymns. In schools and kindergarten, Lucia is also accompanied by Santas and kids dressed up as gingerbread.
Almost every little town has their Lucia candidates that people get to vote for. All of them are girls with long hair. A beauty pageant in disguise. As if teenage girls don’t have enough problems with their self-confidence and how they look.
Traditions have to change with the times. Let everyone take part in Lucia, no matter who you are or how you define yourself.
Lucia is for everyone.
